While you'll soon find your way around the local area, here are a few of our tips about where to find the essentials of life while you're visiting. If you find a local gem we've missed, let us know!
There's a Tesco Superstore in Stalham, around 12-15 minutes drive from the cottage. While it's not the biggest stores, it does have a decent sized car park and a petrol station. It's also a useful place to park up for a while if you want to pop into the nearby high street.
For Sainsbury's, Lidl & Waitrose, you'll need to head over to North Walsham. Oh, and if you love fish, both Happisburgh and the nearby garden centre (north of Stalham) offer plenty of choice. Plus there's always Cromer and its crabs too...
Both Stalham and North Walsham host a variety of well-rated take-aways and restaurants, with nearby parking too. There's also the excellent Kingfisher Fish Bar in nearby Walcott, right on the seafront - although check opening times as it closes fairly early most nights.
Other than these, there's loads of cafés and other places along the coast too - although not all are open outside of the summer season. Generally plenty of parking can be found nearby in car parks, or on the streets - but check carefully for any local restrictions!
For shopping beyond the essentials, you can't go wrong with a visit to either Roys (of Wroxham) or Lanthams (of Potter Heigham). Set aside plenty of time to visit if you do - there's just so much on offer you'll want to make a day of it! North Walsham hosts a traditional outdoor market most Thursdays too.
There are also dozens of farm shops and local traders in the area - so be prepared to pull over if you spot one!
For a more 'shopping mall' experience, head over to Great Yarmouth or Norwich for markets and major chain-stores. Cromer also has a number of big brand stores on its outskirts too.
The Happisburgh Lighthouse is a must, open in the summer month but stunning to walk past all year around. Further afield Sea Palling is great for a classic ‘sea-side’ visit, while Overstrand and Mundesley are fascinating locations worth exploring. Or why not follow the Deep History Coast or visit impressive Horsey Mill or Felbrigg Hall and its grounds. And did we even mention boating on the Broads?
Most supermarkets listed have every day medical goods, for more specialised aid you'll probably want to visit a pharmacy - and thankfully most towns have one or two. The Boots in Stalham High Street is probably the nearest to the cottage. For minor injuries, Cromer Hospital is ideal. For more serious medical assistance, hospitals Norwich and Great Yarmouth are your best options.
While we hope you won't need it - but if you do, for veterinary assistance there are: the Broadland House Vets (Stalham) along with Westover Vets and Toll Barn Vets (both in North Walsham).
